I purchased this remote since we are doing away with cable and using broadband and a digital antenna for TV viewing. This is saving us 75.00/mo. Next is a TV tuner card so we can use Windows Media Center to replace our DVR. But I digress. Now for the good and a little bad:
1. Worked right after charging it up and plugging the USB receiver in my Windows 7 laptop. I usually use this device 6 to 10 feet away. But for this sentance I'm standing 18 feet back. So this has excellent range.
2. Very simple to use. Our 6 year old uses it to navigate pbskids.org. The mouse pad and keyboard are very responsive. However, it is a little more difficult than texting with the touchpad on the right. I have to stretch a little more with my right thumb.
3. The audio controls work well with iTunes. Mute, volume, pause and play work perfectly. Although the next track and previous seem to operate backwards. This is not a big issue for me since I usually start a playlist then walk away.
4. The size is great. Smaller than the rest of my remotes, but large enough to see and type with. The keys are larger than any smartphone I've used. I do not like that you have to hold Shift + a letter to get a single cap though. I'd rather hit Shift then a letter for a cap like a smartphone. The backlight is invaluable.
I've only had this a couple of days so I really can't address battery life or durability. I'm going to see how long this works on a single charge and then update this review. Right now I can highly recommend this remote.
One minor glitch while proofing my review, the cursor stopped responding. Resetting the receiver fixed it and now I can finish. One added bonus for cat owners is the built in laser pointer. Our cat loves it.
Update 2011/12/27 - Battery life is pretty good. I noticed the mouse was not as responsive after 5 days. This coincided with the low battery indicator blinking. Even though it's only five days, it's still pretty good since I use this remote a lot more than a regular TV remote since we now Facebook and browse various Internet sites using this remote.
And one correction to item 3 in this review. This does not control the audio controls in iTunes. But rather the audio controls on my netbook. Control of these features may vary with your device.
this thing is just awesome. first off I want to talk about the touchpad and what they don't really inform you about for some reason, it's a multi-touch touchpad. what this means is that it can detect more than one finger at a time (I haven't tried any 3 finger commands but two finger commands do work, for instance putting two fingers and moving them down will cause the page to scroll down. (and it actually works as good as the one on my netbook) moving the mouse and clicking with it also work well, even on my 1920 x 1080 resolution screen.
the keyboard is very similar to what you would get on a black berry cell phone in how they feel, personally I would have preferred more of a standard style for them but these still get the job done and work just as well.
the backlighting works great, not too bright and not too dim, and can be turned off which is a nice feature considering that it'd be a waste of energy in the day.
the function keys work as they should and are clearly labeled including most of the common media player controls and a few neat additions like ctrl+alt+del, a button I am not certain what it does (it is inscribed on the key as RF but when clicked it turns on the caps lock and for a little while buttons won't register on the computer like it's setting up some kind of macro but I don't know where I would even press to activate it, if anyone knows what it's for please comment! :D) and a button that does something insanely cool. the button (function key Alt) turns the transmission of the touchpad 90 degrees, what is does it it allows you to hold it like a remote and use the laserpointer without having to hold one hand sideways to control it. it works very well and is something I had never seen before!
the wireless receiver is a nano receiver (the really tiny kind) and works fairly well, it picks up inputs from my bed a good 6-7 feet away no problem and I've found it to only start sputtering at around 15 feet away. when not in use you can store the receiver within the unit in a compartment on the top.
the actual transmission of keystrokes/mouse movements is great. I've had full size keyboards and mice that would miss a keystrokes since it had to wake up but this one picked up every one even if it had fallen "asleep"
the battery so far has been great, it comes with a charging cable and it has as of yet not died on me or even come up with a low power light (also it has an indicator for when the battery is charging or low along with one for caps lock and another light for something I have yet to discover)
the laser pointer is a laser pointer, it looks very bright but I honestly never had one before so I don't really have much to compare it to so I don't have much to say about it.
overall the layout of the buttons is pretty good, the only thing I would change is I would have put the right and left mouse buttons on the top edge of the unit rather than below the touchpad. if they had i wold have been able to put another pro, games. it would have actually been able t work similarly to a video game controller (making the touchpad a virtual joystick) I tried playing call of duty with it and the only problems I had were A. my thumb was too big for the "WASD" keys and B. the mouse buttons were hard to press. other than that it actually held up pretty well. if anyone from Favi is reading this try making one for gaming! it would be sweet!)
overall this device is awesome, for $30 bucks there is nothing better on the market!
Top reviews from other countries
I could have got a normal size keyboard and mouse but it would probably cost more overall.
While it is quite tiny, it is still bigger than keyboards that we have on our phone for texting.
The touch pad works well, but may need some practice to use it to its full capability.
It worked well straight out of the box, with the TV recognising it as soon as I plugged the USB into the slot.
I also tried it on my I-Mac and it worked well there too.
One thing that i didn't see in the other reviews, is that you need 2 USB slots, unless you want to keep plugging/unplugging the dongle that goes in the TV and the USB charger lead.
I have a spare USB hub which i have connected to the TV and both the dongle and charging cable work perfectly with this, and it now sits on top of the DVD player ready for use at any time.
So you may want to order one of those too at the same time.
The keypad lights up at the touch of a button too, so you can send messages on Facebook,e-mails etc through your TV, while your partner is asleep on the sofa.
The red laser pointer is not really necessary in the home environment, apart from teasing my cats.
The instruction booklet is not very comprehensive, and has a few spelling mistakes, but it gives you the general idea and most of the functions of the keypad are quite easy to pick up.
Small and smart, a very good product at a very reasonable price.
