His early study and teaching at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau in the twenties introduced the wunderkind to the older giants of the era of whom three – Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Walter Gropius – were to have life-long influence upon his professional life.

Dixon, Tom
Tom Dixon, Tunisia. Born in Sfax 1959, to a French/ Latvian mother and an English father, Dixon moved to England aged four and spent his school years in London. Attending Chelsea Art School for a brief six-month period, a motorbike accident curtailed any artistic ambition. Having dropped out of Art school, Dixon spent two years as a musician, playing bass guitar in a disco band until another motorcycle accident left him unable to play for a period. He is one of the most talked-about avant-garde designers.
Eckhardt, Rob
Born in 1953. After his studies at the department of Architecture on the former Polytechnic of Delft, Rob Eckhardt settled as an independent architect in 1980. Soon he met a few persons who were rebuilding and decoration of several cafës in Amsterdam. Through these channels he obtained the assignment to design a compact chair for a Disco.

Alfredo Häberli, Sveits. Häberli was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1964. Today, he is an internationally established designer based in Zurich. He manages to unite tradition with innovation, joy and energy in his designs. The result are works with companies such as Alias, Iittala, Luceplan, Moroso and Volvo.
Hutten, Richard
Richard Hutten graduated at the Academy Industrial Design Eindhoven in 1991. That same year he started his own designstudio, working on a variety of projects such as: furniture-, product-, interior- and exhibition design. He developed his 'No sign of design' and 'Table upon table' concepts.

He has worked independently, designing for, among others, Fritz Hansen and E. Kold Christensen. He was awarded a Grand Prix at both the 1957 and 1960 Milan Triennales and a Lunning Prize in 1958.
Knoll, Florence
Florence Schust met Hans Knoll in 1941. Knoll had established the Hans G. Knoll Furniture Company in New York, producing a range of modern furniture designed by Jens Risom. Florence was an architect who had studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, at the Architectural Association, London and under Mies van der Rohe at the Armory Institute, Chicago. Florence Schust had also worked for Marcel Breuer and Walter Gropius.

Born in 1951 at Ferrara and graduated in architecture in Florence.During the period of radical and experimental architecture he was a prominent figure in movements like Cavart, Alchimia and Memphis. De Lucchi has designed products for Artemide, Dada Cucine, Kartell, Matsushita, Mauser, Poltrona Frau and Olivetti, for whom he has been Director of Design since 1992.
Mackintosh, Charles Rennie
Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Architect, designer and artist is celebrated around the world as one of the most significant Art Nouveau artists of the 20th century. Mackintosh's contribution to modern architecture and design is unquestioned. Bruno Mathsson, Sverige. Had his international breakthrough as a furniture designer at the World Fair in Paris 1937. His furniture excited great enthusiasm and admiration and were in great demand all over the world. He was represented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York when it opened in 1939 and at the fair in San Fransisco the same year.
Mendini, Alessandro
Alessandro Medini, Italia. A prominent protagonist of Postmodernism, the Italian designer, architect, and publicist Mendini (1931) was a pioneer. Following architectural studies at the Polytechnicum of Milan, he worked for several years at an architectural firm. From 1970 to 1976 he was chief editor of the periodical Casabella.
Mies van der Rohe, Ludwig
Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, Tyskalnd. Born in Aachen, Germany, he moved to Berlin and joined the office of Bruno Paul. He entered the studio of Peter Behrens in 1908 and remained until 1912. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) was one of the main protagonists of classic modernism and, along with Le Corbusier, one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. In 1905, after completing an apprenticeship as a stonemason in his home city of Aachen, he moved to Berlin. Started his own business in 1913.
Morrison, Jasper
Jasper Morrison, England. Born in London in 1959, and graduated in Design at Kingston Polytechnic Design School, London (1979-82 BA(Des.) ) and The Royal College of Art for Post Graduate studies (1982-85 MA(Des.) RCA). In 1984 he studied at Berlin’s HdK on a Scholarship. In 1986 he set up an Office for Design in London.

Niemeyer, Oscar
Oscar Niemeyer, Brazil. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1907. He graduated from the Escola Nacional de Belas Artas in Rio de Janeiro in 1934, at which time he joined a team of Brazilian architects collaborating with Le Corbusier on a new Ministry of Education and Health in Rio de Janeiro. This proved a formative experience for Niemeyer.

Verner Panton. Danmark. Panton describes as the most remarkable and innovative talent of 20th Century design and architecture. his design was consistently brilliant. he was first to create inflatable furniture, pioneered with the much acclaimed single molded plastic chair and refused to accept gravity by creating the Flying Chair.
Paulin, Pierre
Pierre Paulin, Frankrike. Born in Paris, 1927, studied sculpture at the Camondo school in Paris. 1954 first furniture designs for Thonet chairs, 1958 for Artifort. He created 1960-68 different famous chairs in new materials, the legendary mushroom, the tongue, the little tulip the ribbon chair, etc. produced by Artifort and Mobilier National, as well as a seating carpet. 1968 he created furnitures for the Louvre.
Pawson, John
John Pawson was born in 1949 in Halifax, Yorkshire. After a period in the family textile business he moved to Japan, where he spent several years working as a teacher and visiting the studio of Japanese architect and designer Shiro Kuramata. On his return to England, Pawson enrolled at the Architecture Association in London, leaving after only a brief period of study to establish his own practice in 1981.

Ponti, Gio
Gio Ponti, Italia. Born in Milan, 1891. Ponti did military service during the First World War in the Pontonier Corps with the rank of captain, from 1916 to 1918, receiving the Bronze Medal and Miliitary Cross. Ponti graduated with a degree in architecture in 1921 from the Milan Polytechnic, and set up a studio with the architects Mino Fiocchi and Emilio Lancia in Milan.

Andree Putman, Frankrike. Born in 1925, one of the contemporary world's leading interior designers, with an eclectic background. She began to work in the 1960s as a journalist for the design magazine 'l’oeil' (eye) and to write the column ‘decoration’ in the 'les cahiers de elle' and had a career as a marketing consultant in the fashion world.
Rashid, Karim
Karim Rashid, Egypt. Born in Cairo, Egypt in 1960; half-English, half Egyptian and raised mostly in Canada. He received a Bachelor of Industrial Design in 1982 from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Rietveld, Gerrit
Defining New Forms in Wood. Born in Utrecht, 1888, Netherlands and lived and worked there all his life. Gerrit learned first cabinet making from his father. After leaving the family workshop in 1911, he trained as an architectural draftsman, before he became finally an architect in 1919. Rietveld's most important architectural work, is the Schroder House in Utrecht (1924).

Eero Saarinen, Finland. Architect, born in Kirkkonummi, Finland in 1910. Studied in Paris and at Yale University, after which he joined his father's practice. Eero initially pursued sculpture as his art of choice. After a year in art school, he decided to become an architect instead. Much of his work shows a relation to sculpture.
Thonet, Michael
He earned a place in the history of design as the inventor of the bentwood technique and as a pioneer of industrial furniture production. Following an apprenticeship as a carpenter and cabinet-maker, Thonet opened his own workshop in Boppard, his hometown, in 1819. As early as 1830 he began to experiment with laminated wood.

Dixon, Tom
Tom Dixon, Tunisia. Born in Sfax 1959, to a French/ Latvian mother and an English father, Dixon moved to England aged four and spent his school years in London. Attending Chelsea Art School for a brief six-month period, a motorbike accident curtailed any artistic ambition. Having dropped out of Art school, Dixon spent two years as a musician, playing bass guitar in a disco band until another motorcycle accident left him unable to play for a period. He is one of the most talked-about avant-garde designers.
Eckhardt, Rob
Born in 1953. After his studies at the department of Architecture on the former Polytechnic of Delft, Rob Eckhardt settled as an independent architect in 1980. Soon he met a few persons who were rebuilding and decoration of several cafës in Amsterdam. Through these channels he obtained the assignment to design a compact chair for a Disco.

Alfredo Häberli, Sveits. Häberli was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1964. Today, he is an internationally established designer based in Zurich. He manages to unite tradition with innovation, joy and energy in his designs. The result are works with companies such as Alias, Iittala, Luceplan, Moroso and Volvo.
Hutten, Richard
Richard Hutten graduated at the Academy Industrial Design Eindhoven in 1991. That same year he started his own designstudio, working on a variety of projects such as: furniture-, product-, interior- and exhibition design. He developed his 'No sign of design' and 'Table upon table' concepts.

Knoll, Florence
Florence Schust met Hans Knoll in 1941. Knoll had established the Hans G. Knoll Furniture Company in New York, producing a range of modern furniture designed by Jens Risom. Florence was an architect who had studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, at the Architectural Association, London and under Mies van der Rohe at the Armory Institute, Chicago. Florence Schust had also worked for Marcel Breuer and Walter Gropius.

Lucchi, Michele De
Born in 1951 at Ferrara and graduated in architecture in Florence.During the period of radical and experimental architecture he was a prominent figure in movements like Cavart, Alchimia and Memphis. De Lucchi has designed products for Artemide, Dada Cucine, Kartell, Matsushita, Mauser, Poltrona Frau and Olivetti, for whom he has been Director of Design since 1992.
Mackintosh, Charles Rennie
Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Architect, designer and artist is celebrated around the world as one of the most significant Art Nouveau artists of the 20th century. Mackintosh's contribution to modern architecture and design is unquestioned. Bruno Mathsson, Sverige. Had his international breakthrough as a furniture designer at the World Fair in Paris 1937. His furniture excited great enthusiasm and admiration and were in great demand all over the world. He was represented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York when it opened in 1939 and at the fair in San Fransisco the same year.
Mendini, Alessandro
Alessandro Medini, Italia. A prominent protagonist of Postmodernism, the Italian designer, architect, and publicist Mendini (1931) was a pioneer. Following architectural studies at the Polytechnicum of Milan, he worked for several years at an architectural firm. From 1970 to 1976 he was chief editor of the periodical Casabella.
Mies van der Rohe, Ludwig
Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, Tyskalnd. Born in Aachen, Germany, he moved to Berlin and joined the office of Bruno Paul. He entered the studio of Peter Behrens in 1908 and remained until 1912. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) was one of the main protagonists of classic modernism and, along with Le Corbusier, one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. In 1905, after completing an apprenticeship as a stonemason in his home city of Aachen, he moved to Berlin. Started his own business in 1913.
Morrison, Jasper
Jasper Morrison, England. Born in London in 1959, and graduated in Design at Kingston Polytechnic Design School, London (1979-82 BA(Des.) ) and The Royal College of Art for Post Graduate studies (1982-85 MA(Des.) RCA). In 1984 he studied at Berlin’s HdK on a Scholarship. In 1986 he set up an Office for Design in London.

Niemeyer, Oscar
Oscar Niemeyer, Brazil. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1907. He graduated from the Escola Nacional de Belas Artas in Rio de Janeiro in 1934, at which time he joined a team of Brazilian architects collaborating with Le Corbusier on a new Ministry of Education and Health in Rio de Janeiro. This proved a formative experience for Niemeyer.

Verner Panton. Danmark. Panton describes as the most remarkable and innovative talent of 20th Century design and architecture. his design was consistently brilliant. he was first to create inflatable furniture, pioneered with the much acclaimed single molded plastic chair and refused to accept gravity by creating the Flying Chair.
Paulin, Pierre
Pierre Paulin, Frankrike. Born in Paris, 1927, studied sculpture at the Camondo school in Paris. 1954 first furniture designs for Thonet chairs, 1958 for Artifort. He created 1960-68 different famous chairs in new materials, the legendary mushroom, the tongue, the little tulip the ribbon chair, etc. produced by Artifort and Mobilier National, as well as a seating carpet. 1968 he created furnitures for the Louvre.
Pawson, John
John Pawson was born in 1949 in Halifax, Yorkshire. After a period in the family textile business he moved to Japan, where he spent several years working as a teacher and visiting the studio of Japanese architect and designer Shiro Kuramata. On his return to England, Pawson enrolled at the Architecture Association in London, leaving after only a brief period of study to establish his own practice in 1981.

Gaetano Pesce. An architect-artisk designer based in New York City, has undertaken deiverse commisions in architecture, urban planning, interior and exhibition design and industrial design.
Ponti, Gio
Gio Ponti, Italia. Born in Milan, 1891. Ponti did military service during the First World War in the Pontonier Corps with the rank of captain, from 1916 to 1918, receiving the Bronze Medal and Miliitary Cross. Ponti graduated with a degree in architecture in 1921 from the Milan Polytechnic, and set up a studio with the architects Mino Fiocchi and Emilio Lancia in Milan.

Andree Putman, Frankrike. Born in 1925, one of the contemporary world's leading interior designers, with an eclectic background. She began to work in the 1960s as a journalist for the design magazine 'l’oeil' (eye) and to write the column ‘decoration’ in the 'les cahiers de elle' and had a career as a marketing consultant in the fashion world.

Karim Rashid, Egypt. Born in Cairo, Egypt in 1960; half-English, half Egyptian and raised mostly in Canada. He received a Bachelor of Industrial Design in 1982 from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Rietveld, Gerrit
Defining New Forms in Wood. Born in Utrecht, 1888, Netherlands and lived and worked there all his life. Gerrit learned first cabinet making from his father. After leaving the family workshop in 1911, he trained as an architectural draftsman, before he became finally an architect in 1919. Rietveld's most important architectural work, is the Schroder House in Utrecht (1924).

Eero Saarinen, Finland. Architect, born in Kirkkonummi, Finland in 1910. Studied in Paris and at Yale University, after which he joined his father's practice. Eero initially pursued sculpture as his art of choice. After a year in art school, he decided to become an architect instead. Much of his work shows a relation to sculpture.
Thonet, Michael
He earned a place in the history of design as the inventor of the bentwood technique and as a pioneer of industrial furniture production. Following an apprenticeship as a carpenter and cabinet-maker, Thonet opened his own workshop in Boppard, his hometown, in 1819. As early as 1830 he began to experiment with laminated wood.
