Biography

  • Bridging the gap between Lollywood and Hollywood, playback singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan (born 9 December 1973) from Faisalabad, Pakistan has dedicated his life to carrying the Qawwali torch.

Born into a South Asian music dynasty with his father a musician and his world famous Qawwali singer uncle, Rahat began singing with them from age three. His formal training in Qawwali music began at seven, with his first performance at 13 at his grandfather’s devotional. At 15, Rahat was invited to join his uncle’s Qwwali music group with whom traversed the globe spreading their devotional music. In 1985 the group embarked on a full UK tour.

During the 90’s Rahat frequented on the Lollywood scene as a playback singer in films such as “Mard Jeenay Nahi Detay” and “Pal Do Pal”. Rahat spent much of the nineties touring Pakistan, India and the UK. In 1995, Rahat worked alongside Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder to work on the soundtrack for the Hollywood film “Dead Man Walking”, marrying the East with the West on the tracks “The Face of Love” and “The Long Road”. Gaining notoriety, Khan took his hand in orchestral and film music composition as he worked on the soundtrack for the 2002 film “The Four Feathers” while producing nationalistic and traditional inspired songs.

In 2004 he made his Bollywood debut in the film “Paap” with the hit song “Maan Ki Lagan” kicking off his soon to be prolific Bollywood career. In 2010 Khan was awarded the Star Screen Award for Best Male Playback for his vocal performance on the song “Ajj Din Chadheya” from the 2009 film “Love Ajj Kal”.

In 2014 Khan became the first Pakistani to be invited to perform at the Nobel Peace Prize concert held in Norway where he performed the songs “Tumhe Dillagi” and “Mast Qalander”. With a host of accolades under his belt, Khan has toured the world interpreting the traditional South Asian music he has grown up with and introducing the eastern flavour to the west playing to attentive sold-out crowds across the globe.

  • Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

In the popular imagination, at least, it probably wouldn’t be right to describe Rahat Fateh Ali Khan as a household name here in the UK - it’s certainly fair to say that he doesn’t really receive any kind of widespread television or radio exposure - but when you consider the fact that this guy plays arenas around the country on a regular basis. you quickly come to realise that he is one of the genuinely towering figures in Islamic music. He’s popular in Bollywood, too, but it’s his own, often ballad-driven take on Qawalli - a type of Muslim devotional music - that has cemented his status here in the UK. Of course, the fact that he plays arenas comes down first and foremost to the fact that thousands want to see him sing, but to his credit, his shows are impressively fleshed out with hordes of backing singers and an expansive live band, too. Standout moments include extensive instrumental breakdowns, and YouTube footage of his recent O2 Arena show suggests that dancing in the aisles comes as standard - the man is a genuine phenomenon in his own corner of the world.

  • The genre of Qawwali is not one particularly well known in the UK which is probably why Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is not exactly a multi-million selling chart success. However if you ask anybody in the know they will assure you that Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is one of the most exciting Qawwali since his great father Fateh Ali Khan.

He has an incredibly extensive discography and has soundtracked a number of films including 'Dead Man Walking' and 'The Four Feathers' so he has a great amount of work to hand select his set lists from. He always manages to delight his fanbase though with his warm personality, charisma and wit that help him build immediate connection with the crowd. He talks fondly of his music, his ability to travel and of course his faith. He is well and truly a gentleman when performing and this classic approach proves a hit with the large crowds.

  • Went to his concert in Toronto. Started 1:15 hrs late. Every other song was lip synced. Absolute disappointment. He's talented but lip singing is a big no-no. Equivalent to Ashley Simpson at SNL.

He asked for a 15 min break. Ended up being 45 mins. Hershey center is a terrible venue but guess its the only one that will do if you want more attendees. Sound was terrible. Spot lights would flash into the crowd randomly and blind you. After the second song in the second half we left.

Overall, you're better off listening to his recorded songs from the comfort of your own home. The tracks he lips-syncing are the same ones we see in movies.

Lost respect for him as a live performer. Sad day for music.

  • Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's concert was awesome. There was a lot of energy displayed by the whole group and I really enjoyed it all. I would watch it again if I had the chance. Keep it up Rahat!!

*The only negative point is that the volume was really high, therefore, Rahat had to sing extra loud for the audience to hear him. If the volume could be decreased by a couple of notches, it would be great.
