30th (29th in the US) could mark the delivery of a landmark
social message. More than a million people from over thirty
countries will celebrate 11 years of opposition on the unofficial
"opening day" of the Christmas frenzy.
Buy Nothing Day exposes the environmental and ethical
consequences of consumerism. The developed countries - only
20% of the world population are consuming over 80% of the earth's
natural resources, causing a disproportionate level of environmental
damage and unfair distribution of wealth.
The initiative for the Buy Nothing Day was taken in 1992,
in Canada, by Ted Dave, who was working in the advertising world.
By doing this, he wanted to perform an act against the constant
appeal to overconsume, which advertisements pour out on us.
His motto was: Enough is enough! Since then the idea
of the Buy Nothing Day has been adopted by increasingly more
countries.
