For Huang Zhenhui and his team, a Michael Jackson statue is a dream come true.

And in recognition of this, these Guangzhou-based fans of the late "king of pop" received a letter from his youngest brother Randy Jackson.

"We're proud of you as fans for recognizing his (Michael's) true gifts and talents as an entertainer and a humanitarian."

"The dedication of a statue in Michael's honor is a true manifestation of your steadfast love, devotion and support, (and) for this we're humbly grateful," it reads.

The statue is a 2.3-meter high bronze in Guangzhou Sculpture Park, Guangdong province. Jackson's letter forms the inscription on its base.

Standing next to those of numerous historical figures and VIPs, the statue shows Jackson with his arms extended.
Huang, a 33-year-old event planner, fell for the Jackson magic in 1991. After the star's death in June 2009, he organized several memorial activities in the city. It was during a regular meeting with friends, mostly Jackson fans, in May 2010, at a bar near the sculpture park, that Huang came up with his idea of having a statue of Jackson in the park.

He recalls how his friends laughed at him then, pointing out the incongruity of having a popular foreign star featured in the largest sculpture park of the country.
"Even Elvis Presley hasn't been treated with that honor," they told him.

But one of them did let on that she knew artists at the Guangzhou Sculpture Institute. Huang tracked down Lu Zengkang, a sculptor with access to the park's officials, and told him of his interest.

Huang was clear from the beginning that the statue should be available for public viewing.

"We want to share Jackson's artistic achievements and charitable nature with whoever looks at it," he told Lu.

Huang was soon joined by 14 of his friends. While they had secured a place for, and a creator of, the statue, they still had to arrange the funding.

Huang turned to online fan forum of Michael Jackson Chinese Fanclub (MJJCN.com) to raise the required 158,000 yuan ($24,031). The team invited donations from fans nationwide and even launched an auction of Jackson collectibles, from some 350 fans.
But as Huang inched closer to realizing his dream, he found himself facing criticisms for wasting money.

His critics said the money could be put to better use and given to needy kids.
But Huang carried on and finally won them over.

On the day of the statue's unveiling in January, Jackson's former partner and musician, Howard McCrary, arrived from the United States and gave a performance for the 600 fans present.

The statue conveys a message of love, peace and tolerance, says its sculptor Lu.

Loyal Chinese fans of the late "King of Pop" Michael Jackson have donated 158,000 yuan ($23,000) to erect the first bronze statue of their idol in China.

This project has been approved by the local government and will be completed and installed on January 1, 2011, said Huang Zhenhui, the head of the project. The statue will stand in Guangzhou Sculpture Park in Guangzhou City, capital of south China's Guangdong Province.

Huang said they will hold a ceremony on the inaugural day and raise money for charities, which will spread Jackson’s message of love.

"I'm thrilled to see our dreams will finally come true," Huang said.

Famous sculptor Lu Zhenkang has been designing the statue.

Jackson died on June 25, 2009 after he suffered cardiac arrest at his home in the Holmby Hills neighborhood in Los Angeles. His death triggered an outpouring of grief and tributes worldwide.

Re: Loyal Chinese fans to erect 1st Michael Jackson statue in China

Wow!!!

I'd like to see statues like this one all over the world - at least in countries, where Michael has been present at least once in his lifetime. He'd definitely deserve it!

Re: Loyal Chinese fans to erect 1st Michael Jackson statue in China

China is so lucky, having the their first statue of Michael Jackson in their country. A very few other countries have done it and I wish Canada would do the same thing.

Re: Loyal Chinese fans to erect 1st Michael Jackson statue in China

That's such a wonderful sculpture! I love the design :D I doubt a fan led one will happen in the UK for a good while because there'll be the inevitable fighting about who will lead the project and who gets credit :(

Re: Loyal Chinese fans to erect 1st Michael Jackson statue in China

Nice. I know many fans like to see that erection..

Re: Loyal Chinese fans to erect 1st Michael Jackson statue in China

and outside the Staples Centre if i'm being honest

There should be, but knowing my country, it'll never happen. It'll be defaced, a mixture of fan and disrespectful comments would be written on it, and some people would be in need of some serious ass whoopin'. Anywho, this is beautiful and applaud those who made it possible, :clapping:....Can't wait to see when it's done.

Re: Loyal Chinese fans to erect 1st Michael Jackson statue in China

There should be a statue outside the O2 Arena and outside the Staples Centre if i'm being honest

Agreed, and maybe after the court case is over it might be possible to plan something...if not a full blown statue then at least a plaque or something 'undamageable' (idiot resistant). Maybe something like a 'surprise' fountain...something fun. Chinese fans raised funds themselves, so its a matter of mobilising interest and finding a desgn to agree on. It would be nice if the O2 could start the ball rolling maybe with something like a pavement 'star' (like those outside Grauman's theatre in Hollywood.)
If someone wanted to raise funds it should be relatively easy if this was done via selling something linked to the planned memorial eg a model or picture of the design.
