13 Awesomely Weird, Scary & Creepy Halloween Photos

Posted Thursday, 18 October 2007 by Eric Hebert in Design, Inspiration, Photography
With Halloween about to creep up on us from behind brandishing an over-sized kitchen knife, we've put together a fine selection of dark and unsettlling images that are perfect for any Halloween related design project. You might get some fresh ideas for this year's Halloween costume too.

jack o lantern

Let's face it, it just wouldn't be Halloween without a traditional Jack O' Lantern. While many carve their own versions, and with surprisingly creative results, it's the traditional Jack that all of us know and love as a staple of Halloween decor.

Many legends exist about where the carved out pumpkin got his name; usually European tales of a thief named Jack and his misadventures involving the devil.

They usually ended with Jack left wandering between heaven and hell with a carved out vegetable to light his way. This photo of the classic Jack O'Lantern carve, along with other fall related props like goards, corn, and leaves, is sure to look great in any family friendly project.

devil girl

In modern times, Halloween has become more than just a kids holiday as more and more adults embrace the fun of dressing up and role playing for a night (and bringing the holiday back to more of its older traditions). As a result, many events are taking place that need certain pictures to get the attention of would-be party goers.

When looking for an attractive but evil piece, the devil's lady-friend is sure to always please and get things "hot" just like the devil would have wanted. You'll not only grab the male demographic into attending whatever alcohol-fuled event you're trying to promote, but also give the ladies potential costume ideas (or lack thereof!)

blood and guts

The beverage of choice of the undead, full of minerals and nutrients of the living. Blood is life, and wherever it is splattered (along with organs and "guts" of course), you know that life is no more (or on its way to being no more anyway).

Take all of the wonderful Halloween symbols, add some extra blood, shake and stir and you've cooked up yourself one "hell" of a scary good time.

Here we have the frightening truth that awaits us all, in an artistic expression of our fate, of course. While your Halloween can go on with out buckets and buckets of blood, it's just all the more intense when it is present, smeared across the walls, floors, and faces of those involved.

devil

If Halloween is the day where others dress up as everything evil, who could forget the devil himself? This guy is the annual winner of the "most evil" award, and should be present in your project. It's his day to shine, and the dude with the big red horns should be given his share of the lime light.

Another kid-friendly picture, use this close-up of the devil mask to scare the pants off the little ones and set the tone for parents that, while he is the epitome of all that is bad and evil in the world, it's in reality just a silly mask and that Halloween is just for fun!

doll

While people dressed up in costume can be creepy and all, there's nothing more creepy than those which do not have life but all of a sudden start to show signs of it. Popularized by the now classic Child's Play horror franchise, the evil doll has taken on a "life"of its own.

One minute you're tucking the little one to bed with her favorite playtime friend in tow, the next you're running for your life as the plastic princess embarks on a killing spree. Seriously, if you're looking to creep up your Halloween projects, a broken toy doll is one of the newer decorative ways to showcase your horrific mind.

haunted house

With all these monsters and ghouls out and about on Halloween, you've got to ask yourself, "where do they hang out before the holidays"? A haunted house of course!

What better back drop to a Halloween setting than an old, run down, creepy looking house! Castles are a step up on the haunted-ladder, mostly because of the history they have (older locations mean more ghosts abound).

Drop in a murky, cloudy sky, and a full moon, and you have a bona fide scary-as-hell location. Sprinkle in some bats and black cats and it's a sure bet that anyone checking out this real estate listing won't be worrying about the asking price!

haunted forest

If one were to dare do a walk-through of the house described above, it would be a sure bet that they'd encounter all kinds of horror.

However, just because you make it out of the front door doesn't mean you are safe - there's still a haunted forest looming around you on your way out! There really is something freaky about faces in things that don't have faces, and trees are at the top of that list!

Remember the tree-creatures from Lord of the Rings? How about the haunted forest from Mortal Kombat II? Another "newer" kind of Halloween character, as long as we all see faces screaming at us from the trunks of trees, it will freak us out - a great piece of composite photography to promote that haunted hayride.

skulls

No matter what you throw at us, whether it be devils, ghosts, or haunted trees, one thing is sure to give anyone the heebee-jeebees; death!

No matter how much of a tough guy you think you are, toss a human skull in your hand and trust me, you'll be out of the door faster than Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. The more skulls you can collect in one place, the more you increase the fear factor.

No one likes to think about death and the skull is the ultimate symbol of it. Spruce up any Halloween project with these real-life human skulls instead of some silly cartoon ones if you dare; you might just end up scaring yourself in the process!

zombies

Zombies have become increasingly popular over the past few years, especially in Hollywood. Films like Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later have brought the zombie back into the public eye, and are the perfect character to use around Halloween time.

They're creepy, disgusting, already dead, and roam the earth seeking out brains. What more could you possibly want?

Because of their nature, they'll fit into any project and can be combined with any other Halloween character to make a unique situation - they just work in any horrific situation. A perfect backdrop for that haunted motel or corn maze you're putting together.

skeleton

Okay, so maybe zombies and skulls just aren't enough. Sometimes, you need a walking, talking skeleton to get the fright job done. This one here looks as if he's in the middle of break dancing, which makes him twice as frightening. Seriously though, the skeleton is one of the oldest forms of Halloween staples, mostly because it is one of the most literal symbols of death there is.

While creatures such as witches and goblins and even ghosts can be debated as imaginary, we all know what happens to us once we bite the dust; use this animated skeleton in either a serious "scary" situation or doctor the image to put ol' bones into a comedy photo.

psycho

As scary our dead selves can be, there's something to be said for the living people here on earth that can do quite the same while they are still alive. Many of these types can easily be stereotypical psychopaths and fit right into the rest of our colorful characters that represent the best of Halloween.

Look at those eerily gazing eyes, crazy un-kept hair, and a creepy smile that says "I'd like to eat you for dinner", enough to warrant an emergency phone call from some scared parent. Perfect for a make-up product packaging or "live" Halloween production.

school girl

Okay, if you haven't figured this out by now, this author is male; that being said, it's no surprise that the devil girl AND the naughty murderous school girl made the list. What could be more terrifying than if one of your sexual fantasies turns on you and carves your heart out - literally...

Nothing says evil like the school girl. Innocent at first, she'll wrap you around her finger with her web of lies and then give you the punishment that you probably deserve in the first place. If your project is a little more adult related and you need an image to spice things up a bit, then throw my ex-girlfriend here into the mix. If she's going to be at the party, count me in!

full moon

When all is said and done, the mood of Halloween plays a major role in creating the ultimate haunted atmosphere. What good is a bunch of scarecrows and wolves drooling blood gonna be if the sun is shining in their eyes? Or if it's pitch black and you can't see anything at all?

No, to truly experience the dread that is Al Hallows Eve, you must have just enough light to see the blood and gore and brains, and it's not coming from a glow-in-the dark safety sticker. It's coming from the full moon, the sister world of earth that shines its uncertainty into the skies above us as we tremble in fear of all that Halloween has to offer us. Trick or treat!
